"So this is where you live," Kracha said.

"It needs a little fixing," she admitted. "But if it was in perfect condition I wouldn't be getting it for ten dollars a month."

He grunted. "When I first came to America," he said, shaking the porch rail to test it and stopping almost at once because it threatened to come loose in his hand, "the railroad gave us better houses than this for nothing."

"You haven't seen the inside yet and you're finding fault already. Come in and look at your room."

He was to have a bedroom to himself while she and the children shared the other. His held a bed, a chair and an old washstand. On the wall was a picture of the Holy Family, on the floor a rag rug. The sharp slope of the hill darkened the room and kept it cool.

Kracha put his suitcase on the bed without comment.

"Well? Can't you say something? I tried to hx it nice for you."

"What do you want me to say?"

She asked him what time he had to be at work in the morning.

"Seven. I've been getting up at six but I see now I'll have to get up a good half-hour earlier." He said it like a man looking for an argument.

Mary did not intend to give him one. "Do you work night turn?"

"No."

She felt relieved. Night turns would have made it next to impossible for her to accept outside work.

They didn't discuss what board he should pay. When payday came he had his supper and dressed; as he was leaving he put a ten-dollar bill on the table. "Here."

She looked at it and then at him. "What's that for?"

"My board. Two weeks' board."
